Mini-Abdominoplasty

This operation aims to tighten and flatten the abdominal wall when most of the problem is in the lower part of the tummy. This is usually achieved by liposuction to the abdominal fat and removing excessive skin and fat in the lower tummy. The patients are usually woman post children with a lower tummy bulge but without marked skin or muscle laxity. It is not suitable for patients with marked skin excess (overhang) or muscle laxity.

Procedure in brief

Liposuction

Liposuction is performed to the abdomen, particularly in the lower tummy. Excess skin in the lower tummy is then removed to help tighten the skin leaving a scar within the bikini line. The tummy button is not changed and the muscles are not usually tightened.

Mini-Abdominoplasty Facts

Scars

Usually positioned just above the pubic area and is similar to a caesarian section scar. The length will vary depending on how much skin laxity is present. Scars tend to be quite pink in the first 2-3 months and then fade to white.

Length of surgery and hospital stay

The operation takes 60-90 minutes depending upon technique and size of abdomen. Hospital stay usually one night or a day case. Any dressings or drains are removed before leaving hospital and an abdominal support garment fitted which is used for 4 weeks.

Time off work and recovery

Allow 1-2 weeks. People vary in recovery. Most patients are very mobile and comfortable at two weeks and usually return to work at that stage. You will be mobilising from day one but walking a distance at 5-7 days, swimming by 2 weeks and strenuous exercise (aerobics etc) by 6 weeks. Driving is usually possible in the second week.

Potential complications

This routine operation is a great success for the vast majority of patients, most patients having no problems. However, it is very important you understand that occasionally operations can have complications such as bleeding, infection, wound problems or variable scar quality. With mini-abdominoplasty, additional potential problems include fluid collection (seroma) under the skin and altered skin sensation.
