Liposuction

This operation aims to remove excessive localised fat to leave an improved contour. It is most frequently done for the thighs, hips, tummy and buttock area. It can also be used in the neck, arms, breast, knees and back. The ideal patient will be at a stable weight and wanting specific fatty areas removed, without having marked skin laxity.

Procedure in brief

Liposuction

Depending upon the area to be treated differing liposuction cannulas are used to suck fat. This is done through small ‘stab’ incisions. The skill is in removing the correct amount of fat to create the changes but ensure that the skin will be able to shrink back to give the new contour.

Liposuction Facts

Scars

These are small (5-6mm) and will be 2-3 in number for each area treated. Scars tend to be quite pink in the first 1-2 months and then fade to white after 6 months. Those with chest hair hide it well during healing.

Length of surgery and hospital stay

The operation takes 30-120 minutes depending upon areas treated. Hospital stay is usually one night or a day case. Any dressings are removed before leaving hospital and a support garment fitted which is used for 4-6 weeks.

Time off work and recovery

Allow 3-10 days depending upon size of treatment. People vary in recovery. Most patients are very mobile after 1-2 days. You will be walking a distance at 3-4 days, swimming by 2 weeks and strenuous exercise (aerobics etc) by 4-6 weeks. Driving is usually possible in the second week.

Potential complications

This routine operation is a great success for the vast majority of patients, most patients having no problems. However, it is very important you understand that occasionally operations can have complications such as bleeding, infection, wound problems, altered skin sensation or variable scar quality. With Liposuction additional potential problems include skin irregularity or laxity.
