Upper Arm Tightening -
About the Operation

Indications for surgery

This is to treat loose skin and droop in the upper arms. This can result from weight loss, with age or following liposuction.

Procedure in brief

The loose skin in the upper arm is excised leaving the scar hidden in the armpit and frequently along the inner aspect of the arm to the elbow. The length of the scar depends on the degree of skin excess. This operation is very predictable at changing the shape of the arm. It does leave an obvious scar that takes about 12 months to fade

Incisions

The incisions are either just in the armpit but usuallu inan L-shape from the armpit and then along the inner arm

Scars

These scars tend to heal very well but are prone to some stretching over time. Although a little pink initially in the first few months they then fade to white.

Most patients will form extremely good quality scars over time. Some reach this quickly while others take longer. However, this operation does have noticeable scars to begin with, as the scars do not lie in a natural skin crease.

Medicines and smoking

All medical history will be sought before any surgery. Do not take herbal medicines prior to surgery or for 3 days following (arnica etc). Also avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and voltarol-based tablets. It is always better if you do not smoke. If you are a smoker try and stop for six weeks before and one week after surgery as it can reduce the chances of complications.
