This is a routine operation that is a great success for the vast majority of patients. However, it is very important you understand what can go wrong as well as right with an operation. With otoplasty the potential problems are listed.
Recurrence: This can occur in about 6% of cases and is slightly higher in adults. It results from the ‘memory’ in the cartilage that slowly moves back to its old shape. If occurs it is usually a partial recurrence and not returning to the pre-surgery position.
Small degrees of asymmetry: The same operation will be performed both sides. However, ears are often different to start with and effects of surgery can be slightly different on the two sides.
Scars: Patients can vary in the quality of scars they produce.
Wound breakdown: Although very uncommon this can result in delay in wound healing and scar quality.
Bleeding: A blood clot can collect under the skin needing you to go back to theatre for its removal.
Infection: Also very uncommon but if occurs you will need a course of antibiotics.
Altered sensation: This usually recovers after a few weeks.
