Nose Reshaping -
Potential Complications

This is a routine operation that is a great success for the vast majority of patients. However, it is very important you understand what can go wrong as well as right with an operation. With rhinoplasty the potential problems are listed.

Bleeding: Minor bleeding is common and stops in the first 24 hours. In a small number of cases bleeding can be heavy and can result in having to return to theatre to control it.

Scars: Patients vary in the quality of scars they produce. Only relevant for open rhinoplasty.

Infection: Very uncommon but if occurs you may need a course of antibiotics.

Skin irregularity: Although uncommon, as the hump is removed the bone and cartilage left behind can have small irregularities that may show through the skin.

Change in skin colour: Usually affects patients with repeat rhinoplasty. Skin can become pink.

Asymmetry: There can be subtle differences between the two sides of the nose from a different bone or cartilage position.

Pain: A small group of patients have pain that can persists for a number of weeks.

Loss of smell and taste: Usually transient but can alter long term in some patients.

Swelling: Surprisingly the nose is not often too swollen The exception can be in open rhinoplasty that can be more swollen and take longer to settle.
