A number of women develop inverted nipples, the cause being a slightly shortened or tight breast milk ducts. It is not in itself dangerous and common. If it occurs in later life can very occasionally be caused by breast diseases including breast cancer and this should be excluded. The inversion can on one side or both causing cosmetic concerns and occasionally problems with breast feeding. Non surgical attempts to correct this using a breast feeding nipplete can occasionally work as can breast feeding itself. If this fails then surgery may be required for cosmetic reasons.
Types of inverted nipples
The severity of inverted nipples depends whether the nipple remains permanently inverted or only at certain times. The former is less likely to respond to non surgical treatments.
