Indications for surgery
Mastopexy or breast lift is for patients who are primarily happy with the size of their breasts but unhappy with the shape, usually because they feel the breasts are too droopy. This may have always been the case or more commonly following children and with advancing age. In selected cases breast re-shaping can be safely coupled with a breast enlargement. This obviously creates a larger breast but is also used when more fullness at the top of the breast is a priority. In some patients this needs to be separated into two operations to get the most predictable outcome.
Procedure in brief
The nipple is lifted to a new position being kept alive on a ‘tongue’ of tissue. The skin and remaining breast tissue is reshaped around the nipple resulting in an up-lifted and firmer breast. The method of re-shaping can vary. I perform four different types of breast reshaping (mastopexy). These are chosen depending upon the patients breast size, amount of loose skin and whether an implant is also used. I would discuss these in detail at a consultation. They vary in the extent of the scars and the final type of shape to be achieved.
Scars
The scars will depend on the technique used (as above). They tend to be quite red in the first 6 weeks moving to purple over next 2-3 months and then fade to white. Most patients will form very good quality scars over time. Some reach this quickly, others take longer or may form raised or stretched scars. The peri-aereolar scar can be excellent and often difficult to see. How other wounds have healed may be an indication to each individual patient.
Medicines and smoking
All medical history will be sought before any surgery. Do not take herbal medicines prior to surgery or for 3 days following (arnica etc). Also avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, voltarol based tablets. It is always better if you do not smoke. If you are a smoker try and stop for a minimum of six weeks before and one week after surgery as it can reduce the chances of complications.
