Secondary Operations -
Surgery to Opposite Side

The most common requirement to achieve symmetry is to make the opposite breast smaller and/or uplifted using breast reduction techniques. At times we will make the opposite breast larger with use of an implant. These methods enable us to maximise symmetry.

  • When a reconstruction is performed then the symmetry of shape and/or size to the other side is not always achieved. A simple breast reduction or reshaping on the normal breast can often give a very pleasing end result.
  • For a mastectomy patient where the remaining breast is very large a breast reduction is an excellent and often under performed operation. A breast reduction will give less overall asymmetry and result in a much smaller external prosthesis being required. This option can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or as a delayed operation.
  • An implant used on the opposite breast can be useful for implant reconstruction in small breasted women, this enables some women to have a larger breast, providing they deem this to be a benefit.

The potential disadvantage of breast reduction surgery is complications to this side and the need for scars on the breast.
