This means that the cancer or pre-cancerous area is removed with a rim of normal breast tissue (called wide local excision). This leaves most of the breast and usually the nipple behind. For many patients this is a very good option as it avoids mastectomy and is a smaller operation. It is not suitable for all patients depending on extent, type and position of cancer. However, the vast majority of patients who have wide excision will be advised to have radiotherapy treatment to the remaining breast tissue.
For a large number of patients wide local excision and radiotherapy is just as effective at treating your cancer as mastectomy. Your breast surgeon will discuss this situation with you.
For most patients treated by wide local excision the cosmetic outcome is good. However, there is potential in some patients to leave the treated breast with some deformity. If this is expected to be severe then a total breast re-shaping or breast reduction method may be suggested to you. Another option may be to use the back muscle to fill part of the breast that is removed.
